I've been using Google Maps on my iPhone since my 2013 RAV4. Connected via Bluetooth to the radio. The verbal instructions have always worked through the car speakers for me. For the iPhone, there is a setting under the Google Maps section that must be turned on. Look for "Play as Bluetooth Phone Call".

It would seem the HUD Compass’s feed is being overridden by some weird CarPlay + Google Maps + 2023 RAV4 Prime XSE Infotainment System intersection/behavior. Been asking around on this, and — thanks to various replies — built a test methodology, which is as follows.
